Supply List

2011-12 Supply List

Please check this list monthly, as supplies will be added as we begin new projects, rotate our studies of  artists, composers, poets, etc.

General Supplies
  • 3-Ring Binder (2" or greater)
  • Pencil, Eraser, Pen
  • Lined Paper
  • Pencil Case/Pouch
Note: I'll provide colored paper, 3-hole punched for binder dividers, just fyi.
Famous Lives/ Artist Study
  • 8 x 10 Prints for the current artist for September.
Note: Dana can order a set for you from Kinko's (deadline to order: 8/30/11, cost approx $5) or you may print your own set found here.

Famous Lives/Composer Study
  • Nothing required at this time.
Note: There will be links to composer works on the Composer Page soon, which can be listened to on your computer.

Famous Lives/ Poet Study
  • We will probably start a poetry journal. If you would like, you can have your teen pick out a journal that they like for this purpose. Or, they can use lined paper and insert in their binder (see general supplies).
  • Please consider purchasing a poetry anthology (Dover Thrift Editions here) if you do not have one, or printing some of the poetry (by artist) as linked on the Poetry page. You can also check out poetry books from the library, of course!

Famous Lives/ Book Talk
  • See list here for books needed (some are free online).
Note: I have good luck with book prices at Amazon, Rainbow Resource, and if I shop at Barnes & Noble, I use their 20% Teacher's Discount card. Hope that helps! (Most of these books should also be in the Public Library.)

Hand Crafts
  • TBD
Note: For one of our first handcraft projects, because the Charlotte Mason philosophy is to make something "useful," we can make a small drawstring bag for carrying our Nature Study items. (I have material and thread/needles at home for this project.)

Nature Study
  • Sketch Book: Example here. I suggest spiral bound w/ blank (no lines) pages.
  • Colored Pencils: Nice ones, like *Prismacolor, if possible.
  • Regular Pencils/Erasers: Graphite drawing pencils, if possible.
  • Pencil Sharpener (small)
  • Glue Stick
  • Magnifying Glass
  • Binoculars, if you have them at home already (optional)
  • Digital Camera, if you have one at home already (optional)
  • Ziploc bags for specimen collection.
  • Small tin or other tupperware container for specimen collection.
  • Water Bottle
*Prismacolor pencils can be expensive because they are very high quality. This is only a suggestion. But, you should be able to get a set of 12 for about $10. See here. If you see sets for $25, please don't pay that for now.
Note: You can find almost all of the above Nature Study supplies at Hobby Lobby in the Fine Arts area.  However, there is a nice Nature Study Kit I found for sale online that contains a journal, magnifying glass and several specimen containers (tin & cloth recommended). It can be found here.  (You would still need to purchase pencils, sharpener and glue stick.) Choose what works for your budget.  Go here to find the latest Hobby Lobby coupon and sale ad.

Recreation
  • Athletic Shoes for sports and nature walks - ie, closed-toed shoes.
  • Tennis Racket & Can of Tennis Balls (for tennis in Oct/Nov)
  • Water Bottle
  • *Sunscreen/Bug Spray
*We will be outdoors (when it gets cooler!) for approximately half our meeting time, in both shade and sun. If you would like your teen to wear sun screen and/or bug spray, please send this with them. I am happy to provide some if they forget and need it, of course.
